Pre-Visit Preparations and Suggestions

1. Prepare your students with background history of the Holocaust (Reference: www.USHMM.org).
2. Have students look at the web site for the Holocaust Memorial prior to visit.
3. If you have the opportunity, please come and visit the Memorial by yourself, before you bring the group, so that you know what to anticipate.
4. Suggest students bring pad of paper and pen to take notes. Cameras and video cameras are welcome for school projects.
5. Have students dress appropriately (school clothes, hat and sun glasses suggested). The Memorial is completely out doors.
6. Schedule field trips well in advance. Consider coordinating the visit with the Ziff Jewish Museum in South Beach (Reference: www.jewishmuseum.com).
7. Be sure to call, 305 538 1663, if you are running late or have cancelled the trip.
8. Proper ethical behavior at the Memorial must be taught before coming. Teachers at all times should remain with the students.

Tips for Schools Visiting the Memorial

1. Start tour at the Information Booth to meet the Director and/or the Survivor speaker.
2. Give children opportunity to use the restrooms and get a drink of water before starting the tour. This is important because the Memorial is outdoors.
3. Teacher to fill out Evaluation / Remarks Form (at Information Booth). If you do not have a brochure, please request one so that you have this as reference material for your class.

Post-Visit Summary

1. Have students write a poem or essay of their experience at the Memorial.
2. Have class create a project for the rest of the school reflecting on their visit to the Memorial. Several classes send art projects to the Survivors or to the Memorial. We greatly appreciate this, but until we have the facility to display it we would like you to consider displaying the work / project in your school, or even at a local business, such as a bank, or a local library.
