After establishing the 1935 Nurem
berg Laws and denying German Jews social and political rights, Hitler ordered the confiscation of all property owned by Jews. On the night of November 9-10, 1938, anti Jewish violence openly erupted in Germany and Austria. On that night, which came to be known as "Kristallnacht," or Crystal Night for the shards of broken glass that littered the streets, synagogues and Jewish shops were wantonly burned and destroyed and many Jewish homes were vandalized.
